Hello!
It has been such a pleasure returning to Kelly Lane this year as your 7th and 8th grade ART teacher. I am so thankful for the opportunity to work with such wonderfully creative and talented students each day!
I have earned the reputation as the "Happy Art Teacher" from my students and fellow faculty members. It's hard to to deny. I am thrilled to be your art teacher here at Kelly Lane and I can't help smiling 24/7!
I am here doing what I am doing because of these simple facts: I LOVE art and I ADORE young people. It excites me to be your enthusiastic ambassador to the visual art world.
Just a little about me...
I have hippie parents who named all their kids after trees. I'm Willow and I have three sisters ( Juniper, Tamarack and Cherry) and a brother (Cedar). We grew up in Alaska in a log cabin outside of town enjoying the majesty of the Alaskan wild. I was drawn to the beauty of nature from a young age and soon after wanted to capture what I saw and felt into a work of art. The world of art and imagination drew me in like a magnet and I began my experience as a visual artist. I kept sketchbooks to practice drawing and to write down my thoughts. I wanted to learn everything I could and committed my future to the study and practice of art.
I graduated from the Art Institute of Portland in 2005 with a bachelor of science in Graphic Design. Soon after I moved to Texas and worked on gaining my certification to begin teaching art here in the Lone Star state. I am pleased to say I made a great decision to pursue teaching. I love what I do and the lives I've impacted through my professional journey of about nine years now.
In my life outside of school I enjoy spending time with my husband, Tony, and our two furbabies, Nellie and Ellie. I delight in continuing to grow as an artist myself in my home studio working with a variety of different mediums. I have also started growing Bonsai trees which has been very satisfying and has brought a lot of zen to my life. I simply love to read and I am always looking for a good story.
I hope you will allow me to be part of your journey as an growing artist. I deeply care about students no matter where they are as an artist. Beginner or advanced, I hope to be your guide in leading you to your own path as an artist. I love originality and individuality. There is only one you and you have a unique purpose and message that you bring to this world.
A few of my favorite art quotes:
"Creativity takes courage." -Henri Matisse
"Art is not what you see, but what you make others see." -Edgar Degas
